The final phase of the Bridges Project is the creation of the Safety Net—a space dedicated to honoring the caretakers, supporters, and bridge builders who have held us up on our journey to wellness. Inspired by the Quechua word awaq, meaning "weaver," the Awaq H.A.N.D.S. (Healing Arts Network for Development and Support) is tasked with weaving this net, a powerful metaphor for resilience, healing, and community.
Much like the Golden Gate Bridge, whose safety net was its final addition and was completed in 2023, this phase represents a transformative commitment to saving lives and fostering connection. The Golden Gate’s safety net shifted its narrative from tragedy to hope, and we aim to mirror that energy by building a creative and healing arts network for individuals or organizations on their journey to integration.
This Safety Net aims to be a centralized hub of courageous connections, a space for creative and healing arts practitioners and other nonprofits.
As part of Mental Health Reimagined's mission, the Safety Net bridges the transformative power of creative and healing arts with the mental health care system.
By becoming a part of the Bridges Project, a Threads to Hope host or sponsor, you join this collective effort,
This is how we reimagine mental health—one string, one story, one connection at a time.
In Quechua, "Awaykuna" or "Awaq" translates to "the weavers" or "those who weave." It derives from "awaq," which means "to weave," and the suffix "-kuna," which pluralizes the term, referring to a collective group of weavers.
The term holds profound cultural and spiritual significance in Andean culture, as weaving is not just a practical craft but also a symbolic and sacred practice. It represents the interconnectedness of life, storytelling, and the preservation of cultural identity.
"Awaykuna" reflects the role of weavers as creators of both physical and metaphysical connections, making it a powerful metaphor for unity and healing.
We are stronger together.
